Day 21 - Travel to upper Montana - July 5th, 2025

Today we left Ruby Creek Campground by the Madison River to head north to near Kalispell and Hungry Horse, just west of Glacier National Paek. The ride up was beautiful as we followed the Madison on her meandering journey through the prairie land. We then moved into the mountains and it’s part of the reason I’m behind on writing these entries. No cell! The amount of dead zones in Northern Montana is crazy, and while it made for good excuse to look at the scenery instead of scrolling Facebook, we did hear quite a few complaints from the back seat.

These odd fences were all over the place and we had to Google Lens them to figure out they were snow fences, presumably for cattle.

Osprey. Pic taken on the fly as a lot of these are.

Incredible how these pines can grow roots and somehow cling to these rocks. A common sight in the west.

Hard to see, but an abandoned set of rails paralleled I-90 east of Butte. Must have been a really pretty route. Amtrack’s last run on this line was 1979.

Missed the shot here, but this is the Big Blackfoot River, the famed water featured in the book/movie “A River Runs Through It”.

Arriving at Hungry Horse by late afternoon, we drove across the Hungry Horse Dam. To me, the size was more impressive than even the Hoover Dam, although H.H. is 20 years newer.

Lost Johnny Point Campground, on the lake above the dam.

Tommorow, Glacier National Park.
