Day 20 - Yellowstone National Park - July 4th 2025

Today, we started the drive to Montana, but before leaving Wyoming, we visited the great geysers of Yellowstone, chief among them, “Old Faithful”. We spent a few minutes at the visitor center before heading out back and joining the growing crowd waiting anxiously for the next eruption. It didn’t take too long.

Nearby was Grand Prismatic Spring

And the Excelsior Geyser Crater

4,000 gallons of water per minute drains from the Excelsior into the Firehole River.

The rest of the midday day was spent on the road, but the beautiful sights along the way helped pass the time.

We arrived around midday at the Madison River, a favorite among fly fishers. State camp sites were full at two locations we checked but we had a bit of luck finding a site at a third location. The kids and I headed down after dinner to cast a worm and see if the resident trout were receptive. Unfortunately, minutes later, an ominous cloud bank blew in and we found ourselves making quick work to get back to the camper to beat the rain. Maybe next time.
